Door Handle Replacement
It's worth it to replace door handles if you aren't happy with the way they appear, or if they're difficult to use. With a bit of patience, you can put in the new handle in no time.
The majority of modern door handles come with cover plates that hide the screws to give them a beautiful appearance. However, you will need to attach them separately if the new handle does not already have them.
Remove the handle that was previously used
Door handles are not only important for their aesthetic value to your home, but they're also vital for safety since they let you lock and unlock your door. Over time, the door handle may become loose or feel a bit loose. It could also begin to look worn out and old. This is a sign that it's probably the time to replace your door handle.
One of the first indications that your door handle needs replacing is when it becomes difficult to operate. This is a problem because it means that you can not lock or unlock your door which could be a security risk for you and your family.
Another reason to replace the door handle is if it's damaged or broken. A damaged or broken door handle is dangerous, particularly for elderly or children members who struggle to open it. They may get trapped. It's a good thing that it's easy to fix a broken door handle by replacing the old one.
Modern door handles are generally standard sizes and should fit any door. If you're not sure whether your new door handle will fit, try taking out the old one and determining the holes in its housing. This will enable you to purchase the correct size door handle.
The easiest way to take off your old door handle is to take it off of the door itself. This is usually done with the screw driver. However, some door handles have a cover plate that conceals the mounting screws, so you'll have to cut off this to access the screws beneath. After you have removed the handle that was previously used, take note of how the spindle is attached. This will help you align the new handle.
You can also remove the door handle by uncrewing it from the latch mechanism. You can use a screwdriver to remove the door handle. However, you will need to locate the small latch which is located on the edge cut piece. After taking off the latch, remove the handle and strike plate. Then remove the latch from the door's edge.
Removing the Strike Plate
You'll have to replace your latch plate after replacing the handle. It's the part that holds the hole where the door's latch hooks in when the door closes. The new handles will come with two latch plates: a rectangular and circular plate (see the above diagram which shows the various parts of a door handle). If you have an rectangular latch plate, replace it with a circular one. This will allow the latch to be able to hook into the strike plate and make the handle more convenient.
The first step is to remove the screw that holds the old latch plate in place. The screws are typically tight and require a fair amount of force to loosen them. If you are able, it could be helpful to have another person assist with this part.
The latch plate should easily lift itself out of the door after the screws have been removed. If the latch plate is stuck or won't move use a small file to scrape the edges. This can sometimes open the plate.
You can now move on to preparing the new door strike plate to be installed. Screw the latch plate into the door jamb using the screws that came with the new handles. Be careful not to over-tighten the screws, as this could cause damage to the strike plate.
If you are not sure whether the latch plate is in the correct position, close and open the door to see whether it locks and closes properly. If it doesn't, you will need to adjust the strikeplate upwards or down, or forward or back until the door locks properly.
If the door continues to move or jiggles, then you may have to expand your latch hole on the strike plate. This is more common on older doors. It can be caused by wear and tear hinges that are too narrow, the wrong size latch, or a damaged strike plate. If this is the case then you should use a filing made of metal instead of a chisel, or hammer to adjust the strike plate.
Remove the Latch
The latch is a bent metal piece that slides into and out of a hole on the inside of your door. The latch is moved forward when you turn the handle. It also hooks into an opening in the door frame to keep the door shut. If your door wiggles when you close it, changing the latch may be all that's needed to correct the issue.
It's difficult to see the screws that secure the latch to the door, but there's usually a small slot on the trim plate that permits you to insert a screwdriver and pry it off. After removing the trim plate, you will be able to pull off the latch, as well as the bolts that hold it and the spindle in position.
If the latch doesn't easily be released, try using an old-fashioned paper clip or tool to free it from the handle mechanism. Place the item in the recessed latch slot and gently move it around until you feel the handle and latch begin to split. You may need to repeat this several times before the latch comes loose enough to pull out.
After the old latch has been removed and the old latch is removed, you should be able to move the new latch into the slot with no issues. Make use of the new screws to secure the latch to the strike plate or door frame. Make sure it is properly positioned in the slot and aligned with the screw chambers.
Before installing the new handle, be sure to measure your current backset (the distance from the centre of the large hole on the front surface of the door to the edge). Also, ensure that the size of the latch on the new handle is in line with this measurement.
